New York City has elected Zohran Mamdani as its new mayor, marking a historic moment as he becomes the first Muslim individual to hold the office. The victory has sparked widespread celebration, not only among New Yorkers but also within the Hollywood community, where Mamdani enjoys considerable support.
News of Mamdani’s win has been met with enthusiastic reactions from prominent figures in the entertainment industry. Celebratory posts have flooded social media, with stars like Spike Lee, Cynthia Nixon, and Mark Ruffalo expressing their congratulations and admiration for the newly elected mayor.
Filmmaker Mira Nair, Mamdani’s mother, shared Zoya Akhtar’s Instagram story, emphatically captioning it “Zohran you beauty” accompanied by heart and firework emojis. Akhtar’s original post stated, “Zohran Mamdani has officially won the NYC mayoral race at 34 years old.” Nair, in a previous interview, had voiced her confidence in her son’s ability to make a significant impact through politics. When asked if she had advised him against a career in film, Nair stated, “He should do whatever he wants to do. I do not see it in him to make movies. He is very involved with current affairs, politics, and political issues. I think he can be engaged in the world in some way to make a difference. He is very, very interested in that.”
Nair also addressed her son’s identity, emphasizing his connection to his Ugandan and Indian heritage. “We are not firangs at all. He is very much like us. He is not an Uhmericcan (American) at all. He was born in Uganda, raised between India and America. He is at home in many places. He thinks of himself as a Ugandan and as an Indian,” Nair told Hindustan Times. “He is a very chaalu (smart) fellow. We speak only Hindustani at home.”
The election took place against a backdrop of heightened political engagement from Hollywood, particularly in response to Donald Trump’s return to power. The entertainment industry has not shied away from expressing its political views, and many talk show hosts have closely followed Mamdani’s campaign. Former mayoral candidate Andrew Cuomo, Mamdani’s opponent, was frequently targeted in the monologues of late-night shows like Jimmy Kimmel Live and The Late Show with Stephen Colbert.
Spike Lee, the director of “Do the Right Thing,” was among the first to congratulate Mamdani, sharing a photo on Instagram of the two posing in front of a mural bearing the film’s title. Lee’s caption playfully referenced the Ray Charles song “Hit the Road Jack,” signaling a change in leadership.
Mark Ruffalo and Cynthia Nixon, who actively participated in Mamdani’s campaign by phone-banking and attending rallies, also shared their excitement on social media. Nixon, known for her role in “Sex and the City,” even carved “Vote Zohran” on a pumpkin for Halloween, demonstrating her commitment to his campaign.
Other notable figures, including model Emily Ratajkowski, comedian Ilana Glazer, and actor/comedian Bowen Yang, also posted congratulatory messages, having supported Mamdani throughout his campaign.
Zohran Mamdani, born in Uganda, is the son of renowned historian Mahmood Mamdani and Mira Nair, the acclaimed director of films such as “Salaam Bombay,” “The Namesake,” and “Monsoon Wedding.” His election as mayor of New York City represents a significant milestone, celebrated by both his community and the entertainment industry alike.
