Patna, India – As Nitish Kumar was sworn in as Chief Minister of Bihar for an unprecedented tenth time, questions are being raised about the magnitude of the National Democratic Alliance’s (NDA) victory in the recent state elections. While Kumar’s Janata Dal (United) or JD(U) and its ally, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), secured impressive strike rates – the percentage of seats won out of those contested – their performance doesn’t quite measure up to some of the most dominant showings in Indian state election history.
The JD(U) contested 101 seats and won 89, achieving a strike rate of 88.1%, its best ever in a Bihar election. The BJP, also contesting 101 seats, secured 85 victories, translating to an 84.2% strike rate. While commendable, the BJP’s performance fell slightly short of its 2010 peak when it won 92 out of 102 seats, boasting an 89.2% strike rate. This 2010 performance remains the highest in any Bihar election since 1951 among parties contesting at least 10 seats, with the BJP’s 2025 strike rate ranking second and the JD(U)’s current performance in third place.
However, when compared to state election results across India since 1951, these Bihar victories, including the JD(U)’s highest-ever tally of 115 seats in 2010 (from 141 contested), do not rank among the top 10 most dominant performances. The strike rate is a key indicator of dominance. While there have been just four instances of a party’s strike rate exceeding 80% in Bihar (all since 2010), and 24 cases of the strike rate crossing 50%, these figures pale in comparison to some other states.
Among opposition parties in Bihar, the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) recorded its best strike rate in 2015, winning 80 of 101 seats contested (79.2%). The Congress party’s best showing was in the first-ever election in 1951, winning 74.2% of the 322 seats contested. The Janata Party’s 68.8% strike rate in 1977, during the post-Emergency wave, ranks eighth-highest in Bihar’s history.
Chirag Paswan’s Lok Janshakti Party (Ram Vilas) achieved a 67.9% strike rate this year, winning 19 out of 28 seats contested, ranking ninth-highest. The Congress party’s 1957 performance (210 wins from 312 seats contested, a 67.3% strike rate) rounds out the top 10.
A deeper analysis of the four major Bihar parties – JD(U), RJD, BJP, and Congress – reveals that their strike rates have more often than not been below 50%. The Congress party recorded its lowest strike rate in 2010, winning just four seats out of 243 contested (1.6%).
Looking beyond Bihar, several state elections have witnessed far more sweeping victories. There have been three instances of parties winning all seats contested and 32 instances of parties crossing the 90% mark (among parties that contested at least 10 seats).
Sikkim holds the distinction of two 100% strike rates: the Sikkim Sangram Parishad (SSP) in 1989 and the Sikkim Democratic Front (SDF) in 2009. Actor-politician Pawan Kalyan’s JanaSena Party (JSP) achieved a 100% strike rate in Andhra Pradesh last year, winning all 21 seats contested as part of an alliance.
Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh feature prominently in the list of top 10 strike rates, with four and three instances, respectively.
The All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK)’s 1991 victory in Tamil Nadu, winning 164 of 168 seats contested (97.6%), launched Jayalalithaa’s first term as Chief Minister. However, the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) reversed this in 1996, winning 173 of 182 seats contested (95.1%).
More recently, the Telugu Desam Party (TDP) secured a sweeping victory in Andhra Pradesh last year, winning 135 of 144 seats contested (93.8%).
While Nitish Kumar’s tenth term is a significant milestone, the NDA’s victory in Bihar, though impressive, is not among the most historically dominant election sweeps witnessed across India.
